Doing Shibari in public - a question of expression and perception

There’s discussions within the swiss community due to a recent public shibari gathering that made it into media in a not so pleasant way about whether shibari is okay in public or whether playing in public is a no-go. And this is where I see a problem: practicing shibari and playing in public are often treated as one and the same in the argumentation. Sure, shibari has an erotic background in terms of its origins. But it is also an art form. A craft. An acrobatic and athletic challenge.

If you practise shibari in public, it’s all a question of how you present yourself, which ultimately translates into the perception of those watching you. Confidently occupy a tree. Take out your rope and your photo equipment. Do a few stretching exercises. And then you pull off a technically clean, fluid suspension, which is untied just as fluidly after a few photos. It won’t be perceived as a bondage session in public. It will be perceived as what it is: an impressive performance art or photo project that they have just witnessed, usually reacting with curiosity, fascination and genuine interest. Of course, there are also a few who can’t relate, make an infantile comment, or even take a photo of it. But all of this also happens when you dance the tango or perform improv theater in a very public space. That’s part of the deal when you take up public space with something eye-catching. However, the positive reactions far outweigh the negative ones and I have never experienced any real outrage when performing artistic technical shibari in public.

So yes, a play session with sexually loaded dynamics does not belong in public where people meet in everyday life. But when it comes to practicing and showing shibari as an art form, as something aesthetic, as a craft, as an acrobatic or athletic challenge, I see it differently. In this case, I think practising in public is not only okay, but I also see it as an opportunity to enter into a dialogue with honestly interested people, to provide context and perhaps also to contribute to the normalization and destigmatization of our concerns if in-depth conversations arise.
